The Work of Finding Part II: Families, Loved Ones, and Beyond
摘要
This chapter turns attention to the families and loved ones of the missing and the broader communities who mobilize in the work of finding. It traces how families act from the earliest moments of disappearance through long-term and cold cases, engaging in searching, documentation, digital archiving, liaison work, and advocacy. These efforts both complement and compensate for institutional responses, often sustaining investigations when formal activity slows. It situates this labour within broader community and collective responses, including grassroots initiatives, NGOs, and digitally networked search efforts. Finally, drawing on major inquiries in Canada and internationally, the chapter situates these practices in relation to systemic shortcomings in policing and emergency management, arguing that any effective response to missing persons must formally integrate family- and community-led capacities.
