Although big tech companies make much of their revenue from selling advertising services, those services do not always work as promised. This chapter focuses on advertising through algorithmic media, analyzing communication issues related to targeting errors, discrimination, wasteful placements, “bluff ads,” and more. The chapter also explains why some advertisements make it seem as if someone was eavesdropping on our conversations, as well as broader social issues associated with advertising.
