Over the last few decades, billions of people have experienced changes in day-to-day life which can be directly attributed to large technology companies. In particular, Apple, Google, Meta (parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp), ByteDance (parent company of TikTok), and Twitter (now X) have changed the way people communicate. This chapter contextualizes the communication changes alongside related narratives about big tech’s psychological and political-economic impacts. It also describes the basic theoretical premises of the book, related to algorithmic communication flows and miscommunication.
