The Rise and Fall of Three Major Empires in West Africa
摘要
Three prominent empires—Ghana, Mali, and Songhay—emerged and declined in West Africa, significantly shaping the region’s political landscape and cultural traditions long before Western political institutions and civilizations arrived. These three central powers played a crucial role in the precolonial formation of West African states, particularly within the Senegambia region. To gain a deeper understanding of the history of the Jola ethnic groups, it is essential to consider the broader external forces that have influenced and shaped their socio-cultural traditions and beliefs. These empires were the first external contacts for the Jola people, introducing them to a global trade network and the exchange of cultural traditions and belief systems.
