Evolution and the Changing Nature of the Jola Society from Isolation to National Politics
摘要
The Jola ethnic group, renowned for its egalitarian culture and traditions, has gradually moved beyond its historical isolation in the Fonis to assume significant roles in the politics of the Senegambia region. Two prominent Jola figures who have attained high positions within the political systems of The Gambia and Senegal are Yahya Jammeh and Ousmane Sonko. The transformation in the political engagement of the Jola community can be linked to various factors associated with globalization that have influenced the people of Foni. These factors include the rise and fall of empires, colonialism, and the sociopolitical constructs of nation-states in the Senegambia region.
