Exploring Metaverse Applications in Ophthalmology: Potential Benefits and Limitations
摘要
This chapter explores the emerging applications of the metaverse in ophthalmology, emphasizing its integration with artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and extended reality (XR) technologies. These immersive tools are redefining medical education, patient engagement, and clinical collaboration through interactive 3D environments that simulate real-world experiences. This chapter discusses how AI-driven virtual platforms can enhance ophthalmic education, facilitate remote surgical training, and expand access to care through telepresence and digital simulation. Early initiatives, such as virtual clinics and AI-assisted diabetic retinopathy screening, demonstrate how metaverse technologies can increase equity and accessibility for underserved populations. Additionally, immersive simulations are improving empathy training and procedural proficiency, allowing learners to practice complex surgeries safely and repeatedly. However, these innovations also pose challenges—including high implementation costs, data privacy risks, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and potential psychological effects such as post-VR disorientation and depersonalization. Ethical and regulatory frameworks must evolve alongside technological progress to safeguard patient welfare and professional integrity. Ultimately, the chapter underscores that the metaverse, when responsibly integrated with AI, holds the potential to transform ophthalmic education and healthcare delivery into more inclusive, interactive, and human-centered digital ecosystems.
