Energy data is critical for transitioning energy systems away from fossil fuels. The continued neglect of energy data can lead us to overlook tradeoffs between energy data benefits (energy efficiencyEnergy efficiency, reliabilityReliability, and affordabilityAffordability) and energy data harms (privacyPrivacy threats, water pollution, energy injustices, and emissions). The chapter begins by outlining a framework for studying energy data, which places the concept at the center of a broader assemblage of energy transitionEnergy transition mechanisms and policies. It then introduces the book and describe its contents, showing how the chapters are organized around three central questions in an emerging field of research, namely energy data scholarship. It concludes with some advice to the reader on different ways they can approach this book.
