Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) is an anatomical and/or functional disorder that causes retrograde flow of urine from the bladder into the upper urinary tract. It significantly increases the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and renal impairment by causing renal scarring. It is a common urological anomaly in children, with an incidence of 1%; 30% of children presenting with febrile UTIs have it. Pharmacological interventions are utilised to either reduce the risk of renal scarring, or as part of surgical treatments to produce a partial obstruction to the malfunctioning vesico-ureteric junction.
