Urethral Stricture Disease
摘要
The male urethra is prone to scarring/fibrosis as a result of inflammation, infection or trauma and affects 0.6% of men in their lifetime. The most likely cause for a stricture varies dependent on its site. All strictures result from an initial injury to the epithelium which ultimately causes fibrosis in the underlying corpus spongiosum. A stricture may occur at any point from the external urethral meatus to the membranous urethra. Although the management of urethral stricture disease has, historically, largely been surgical, some drugs have proven useful when treating this condition. Topical, and intra-urethral, steroid applications have been used for the treatment of urethral strictures as has paclitaxel via the drug-eluting balloon dilation device, Optilume™.
