Local anaesthetics are a routine part of urological practice to allow minor surgical procedures without the need for general anaesthesia or to reduce systemic analgesic requirements in the post-operative setting. Their use is routine and their adverse effects are so infrequently encountered that many urologists are not aware of them. In this chapter, we review their pharmacology, metabolism and toxicity.
