Audience Perspectives: Understandings, Perceptions, and Responses to the COLC
摘要
This chapter draws on data from the focus group study conducted in 2024 which examined people’s perceptions, understandings, and experiences of the crisis and preferred ways of responding, and how these relate to media engagement. Our analysis reveals that focus group participants engaged with a range of media sources to make sense of the crisis and its causes. Whilst some still relied on mainstream coverage, the majority of our participants felt that this coverage did not correspond to their own experiences of the COLC, leading some to seek out alternatives that were more relatable. The analysis also demonstrates that whilst experiences of the COLC were highly differentiated, most of our participants had felt the impacts of the crisis in some way and been made to adapt. In contrast to mainstream news coverage on the crisis and its causes, many participants blamed long-term decline caused by government mismanagement and corporate greed. A central finding which emerged across all groups was a widespread desire for significant change including a fairer system of wealth distribution as a possible solution to the crisis.
