Conceptual Analysis Modeling for Data Warehouse Logical Design
摘要
Following the classical systems development life cycle, data warehouse development is done in three phases, requirements engineering, conceptual modeling and logical design. Here, we focus on the movement from the conceptual model to logical data warehouse design. In contrast to conceptual models of software/information systems that model functional capability of systems, we use our earlier proposed models, that capture the analysis capability to be supported by a data warehouses. These conceptual analysis models are based on two basic concepts, the data to be analysed or analysis data, and the parameters of analysis. These two are related by the “is analysed by” relationship. Additional modeling constructs for specifying permissible analysis and a variety of constraints on analysis are also defined. The conversion procedures proposed here use the analysis capability so captured and form a star schema. We exemplify our conceptual analysis model, discuss conversion to star schema, and convert the example schema into the star schema.
