Enhancing Urban Traffic Efficiency with Adaptive Control for Traffic Signals Over Multiple Intersections
摘要
In urban areas, traffic flow through road intersections is generally regulated by traffic lights. Suppose traffic lights are controlled adaptively instead of a fixed time-based or static traffic control system. In that case, it will be a more effective way to reduce the average waiting time of the vehicles at the intersections during traffic congestion. In this paper, we proposed an adaptive traffic light control approach over multiple connected intersections in urban areas using Vehicular Ad-hoc network (VANET) technology. The proposed approach increases coordination between the intersections through traffic data sharing, decreases the total travel time of the vehicles, and creates an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). A simulation study of the proposed approach is carried out in the SUMO (Simulation of Urban Mobility) simulation environment.
