Design and Analysis of a Hybrid Renewable Energy System Based Microgrid: A Case Study
摘要
Recently, the demand for renewable energy has increased in Duhok city, located in Iraqi Kurdistan, to reduce the environmental damage caused by diesel generators that are used to supply electricity to homes as an alternative if the electricity from the grid is cut off. This paper presents a single-phase grid connected hybrid renewable energy system based microgrid that contains a solar photovoltaic (PV), wind energy, and battery storage system. The purpose is to evaluate performance of the suggested system on Zawa Mountain in Duhok. Accordingly decreasing the reliance on fossil fuel power stations by replacing them with sustainable energy sources. The PV energy, wind energy and battery are connected to a DC link with maintain a constant DC voltage by using a PI controller. First the DC power feeds a DC load then the excess power is converted to an AC power using a single-phase full bridge inverter while ensuring low total harmonic distortion (THD). This inverter operates in bidirectional mode, which can also change grid power from AC to DC to feed the DC load when the power from the renewable sources is inadequate. The proposed microgrid system simulated using MATLAB/Simulink program under different conditions. The result shows that installing a hybrid system (PV-wind) in Duhok can help to generate clean energy to reduce the pollution of the conventional power stations. Such a work is new in the city, so it can contribute to encourage using hybrid renewable energy sources in the future.
