Verification of Effectiveness of AI Rip Current Detection System
摘要
There are from 2,000 to 3,000 rescues including those of unconscious persons on the beaches of Japan every year. Drowning accidents are mainly caused by rip currents, which account for 48% of drowning accidents. In order to reduce the rip current-related accidents, “the AI Rip Current Detection System” was developed in 2018. In this system, webcams on the beach take photos of the surface images. Also, AI analyzes the image data in real time. When the AI detects the rip current generations, the system automatically alerts the beach-goers’ smartphone and lifesavers’ smartwatch using the mobile app. In this study, the effectiveness of this system was verified using Data analysis, Image analysis and a hearing survey. As a result, it was confirmed that the AI rip current detection system can enhance rescue operations, and was generally practical and useful which could contribute to prevent and reduce rip current accidents.
