Exploring the Application of Virtual Reality Through Agile Learning Approaches to Foster Sustainability in Building Design Education
摘要
Integrating sustainability into the built environment is vital to addressing environmental challenges, especially in Africa, where rapid urbanization and population growth demand sustainable design strategies. Although emerging technologies offer promising solutions, their adoption in education and industry remains limited. This paper explores the use of Virtual Reality (VR) and agile learning approaches to enhance sustainability-focused building design education. By integrating VR through the agile learning approach, the research investigates immersive technologies’ potential to simulate real-world building scenarios and improve design decision-making in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) education. In this vein, a literature review (LR) was conducted to evaluate potential benefits and barriers to adopting VR and the agile learning approach in education for sustainable design. The findings highlight VR’s potential to transform sustainability education by providing interactive, engaging experiences, while identifying key limitations such as technical constraints, high costs, and need for pedagogical alignment. The review emphasizes the value of the agile learning approach, particularly its iterative process and continuous feedback mechanisms. The study concludes with suggestions for future research and strategies for effectively incorporating VR into educational programs aimed at promoting sustainability in building design.
