This chapter introduces Critical Race Theory (CRT) and the links to Black feminists who developed intersectionality as a tool for social justice. It explains the foundations of CRT and why it was so important in the post-civil rights era in the United States. Intersectionality theory’s use in disability studies is elucidated but also that while there is much research on gender and disability, there has been less on intersections of race, gender, age, socio-economic class and disability. This chapter explains that this is because intersectionality is seen more as a theory and not a key issue in gender, sociology or disability studies.

摘要

This chapter introduces Critical Race Theory (CRT) and the links to Black feminists who developed intersectionality as a tool for social justice. It explains the foundations of CRT and why it was so important in the post-civil rights era in the United States. Intersectionality theory’s use in disability studies is elucidated but also that while there is much research on gender and disability, there has been less on intersections of race, gender, age, socio-economic class and disability. This chapter explains that this is because intersectionality is seen more as a theory and not a key issue in gender, sociology or disability studies.
