In this chapter, the origins of feminist disability studies and the importance of a materialist standpoint are elucidated. It begins by explaining how disabled feminists became critical of the social model of disability and the lack of diversity in mainstream feminism. It is explained how intersectionality became important as a concern in feminist disability studies and how situating intersectionality sociologically within a systems or structural analysis, allowed for complexity in understanding how ‘race,’ gender, age, socio-economic class and disability are organised by capitalist systems of production through employment.

摘要

In this chapter, the origins of feminist disability studies and the importance of a materialist standpoint are elucidated. It begins by explaining how disabled feminists became critical of the social model of disability and the lack of diversity in mainstream feminism. It is explained how intersectionality became important as a concern in feminist disability studies and how situating intersectionality sociologically within a systems or structural analysis, allowed for complexity in understanding how ‘race,’ gender, age, socio-economic class and disability are organised by capitalist systems of production through employment.
