Sustainable Waste Management in Aviation: Riga Airport Case Study
摘要
This research aims to assess current waste management practices at Riga International Airport (RIX) in Latvia. RIX airport is critical aviation hub, not only for Latvia but also for Northern and Eastern Europe. RIX plays a distinct role in regional connectivity, passenger volume, and cargo operations. Understanding the policy framework and waste management system in RIX is essential for exploring sustainability practices and environmental performance. The research discusses the waste management system of RIX based on a system-based theoretical description. By identifying the system, the research aims to contribute towards enhanced understanding of how stakeholders of an airport have grappled with the complexity of waste management without compromising robust economic and operational performance. The research contributes to the evolving discourse on sustainable aviation management in Eastern Europe. Special attention is given to RIX’s sustainability transition under its 2022–2030 strategy. By doing so, RIX not only complies with Latvia’s Waste Management Plan (2021–2028), but also sets a benchmark for regional best practices in airport sustainability.
