The Establishment of Samtökin’78: Public Pedagogy and Gay Solidarity
摘要
This chapter examines the origins of Samtökin ’78 (S-78), Iceland’s first gay and lesbian rights organization, as well as the broader development of queer activism in the country from the 1970s to the 1990s. Influenced by experiences abroad—particularly in Copenhagen—Icelandic activists returned home with ideas from international LGBTQ+ movements. Early efforts, including the formation of Iceland Hospitality, established a foundation for solidarity and public engagement. The chapter situates this activism within a framework of public pedagogy, highlighting the role of education and discourse in challenging norms and promoting sexual diversity in Icelandic society.
