Stormwater is a major source of pollution in urban environment. Australia encourages treatment of stormwater before disposal to urban waterways to protect the environmental health of receiving waters. In this regard, several stormwater quality improvement devices (SQIDs) have been proposed in Australia. This paper presents a field investigation in Western Sydney University (Kingswood campus) where a bioretention system is installed in a small parking lot to investigate their effectiveness to treat runoff from the parking lot catchment. The set up of the experimental facilities is detailed in this paper. Also, the methodology adopted for sampling and testing is illustrated. Also, preliminary results of the water sample testing including total suspended solids, pH and temperature are presented. It has been found that the tested SQID can reduce 90% of TSS from stormwater runoff. Further study is continued to cover other water quality parameters with a greater number of samples.
