Even for keen observers of American politics, the processes and procedures that undergird our governance are often able to fly under the radar of those who aren’t glued to C-SPAN. This is, of course, natural; we delegate the role of paying attention to them to our elected representatives, who then do just that. And even for keen observers of Trump-era American politics, the constancy of norm-challenging behavior can blur focus. Occasionally, though, something unprecedented happens that can make the public pay attention to procedure and the erosion of norms. January 6, 2021 was one of those moments.
