Other Controversial and Emerging Areas of Genocide Studies in the World of Harry Potter
摘要
This chapter introduces several contested and emerging debates in genocide studies, using narratives in the World of Harry Potter to illustrate them. First, it examines the relationship between war and genocide, outlining four scholarly schools of thought: “war or genocide,” “war and genocide,” “war as genocide,” and “war is genocide.” Applying these frameworks to Grindelwald’s campaign against Muggles, the chapter argues that his declared war is inherently genocidal because it targets Muggles, as a group, as an enemy. The chapter then explores weapons of genocide, focusing on wands. For their effective use as a weapon, wands require proximity and intent, making the effective use of Unforgivable Curses an indicator of genocidal intent. Moreover, disarming Muggle-born witches and wizards is shown to be a crucial step in creating genocidal asymmetry. Finally, the chapter introduces postanthropocentric genocide studies by highlighting anthropocentrism and speciesism in the World of Harry Potter and raising the possibility that nonhuman beings may also be victims of genocidal violence.
