Approaches to Natural Gamma Radiation Detection and Their Economic Implications

Background radiation is always presence on Earth, primarily originating from natural sources such as cosmic rays and terrestrial radionuclides found in soil, rocks, and water. Considering the complex and dynamic nature of environmental radiation (both natural and anthropogenic) the implementation of effective detection approaches is essential. This chapter explores various gamma radiation detection methods with a special focus on economically feasible strategies suitable for application at local, regional, and national levels. A particular emphasis is placed on the importance of identifying low-dose and high-dose areas, which is critical for assessing public health risks associated with long-term exposure. In addition, the human activities and climate change may influence natural radiation levels, further highlighting the need for continuous and adaptive monitoring systems. With outlining a range of cost-effective technologies and strategic implementation models, this chapter provides insight into how economically sustainable radiation monitoring can be achieved to ensure informed decision-making in radiation safety and environmental protection.
