Almost any radiopharmaceutical can be nebulised into an aerosol for inhalation. This is routinely performed, for example, with Tc-99m-DTPA for imaging the distribution of ventilation in ventilation-perfusion (VQ) lung scintigraphy. Inhaled Tc-99m-DTPA crosses the blood-gas barrier into pulmonary blood at a rate that can be measured by lung scanning. Clearance rate is increased in inflammatory lung disease as a result of alveolar damage. It is also increased in healthy as well as passive cigarette smokers.
