This chapter introduces the book by describing its goals and parameters, including the research methodology and a discussion of how the book contributes to existing research and scholarship on leadership. I introduce myself as the author and discuss why I am interested in studying leadership identity development, and I provide brief backgrounds of the eight interview participants. I offer an argument for the inclusion of autoethnography and animal studies as pathways to deeper understanding of human leadership identities. This introduction situates the book in the broader field of leadership studies and within the theoretical frameworks of reflective identity discourses, identity development, narrative studies, and animal studies. Finally, it offers a brief overview of the chapters to come.
