Geographical Distribution of Drug Trafficking in Protected Areas

This chapter provides a detailed analysis of how drug trafficking organisations utilise protected areas for production, processing, and trafficking, and the patterns of their geographical distribution across the country. In this chapter, the territorial distribution of organised crime groups at the national level is analysed and updated using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and contrasted with the territorial distribution of the protected areas. With the objective of visualising geographically the territorial expansion of criminal groups in the country, and the data is supported by documentary analysis and interviews with inspectors and directors of protected areas and the characteristics of criminal groups. This chapter provides an overview of the current public security conditions in the protected areas and offers important information to guide public policy decision-making through scientific information.
