Residents, as well as learners across all levels, require guidance and support. Faculty members and residency leadership can utilize the methods of mentorship, coaching, and sponsorship to support, guide, and provide opportunities to residents. All three models require active engagement from both residents and faculty members, and each uniquely supports the residents. Having a clear shared mental model of what is needed from the learner and how the faculty or leadership can meet these needs will optimize the outcomes.
