Managing the Culture and Teaching of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement
摘要
Patient safety (PS) and quality improvement (QI) are essential components of modern surgical care and must be integrated early in surgical training. This chapter guides the creation of PS/QI curricula in general surgery residency programs. It outlines the rationale for embedding PS/QI into residency, introduces foundational frameworks such as the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and presents strategies for curriculum design, including didactics, experiential learning, and longitudinal integration. The chapter highlights key tools and offers guidance on faculty development, leadership engagement, and multidisciplinary collaboration. It also discusses methods for assessing both resident competency and curriculum effectiveness. By equipping residents with systems-based knowledge and real-world experience, surgical educators can elevate a culture of safety and continuous improvement, preparing the next generation of surgeons to lead in complex healthcare environments.
