Our discussions thus far have focused on the fundamental mechanics of surface gravity waves. We are now ready to apply this knowledge towards the analysis of engineering structures interacting with the ocean environment. However, before introducing pressures and forces exerted on structures by fluids in motion (hydrodynamics), this chapter will first provide a brief overview of pressures and forces resulting from fluids at rest (hydrostatics).
