Engineering Myopia
摘要
While the notion of “seeing the big picture” is often praised in engineering circles, it can easily transform into technical myopia. The integrity of complex projects depends not only on high-level vision but also on how thoroughly their interstices are explored. Coverage is what determines whether the full range of a project or a design has been observed, understood, and acted upon. Just as a lazy pianist may ignore half the keyboard, lazy engineers often selectively focus on familiar “hotspots” while neglecting remote, less interesting areas. Managing complexity requires moving fluidly between macro vision and microscopic attention to details, where the devils love to lurk.
