This chapter examines the murders of Canadian police officers between 1980 and 2023. Eighty-four incidents of fatal attacks on Canadian police officers are reviewed and analyzed. During these attacks, 86 male officers and eight female officers were killed by an assailant (n = 94). Concern within the Canadian police community escalated when fifteen officers were recently murdered during thirteen incidents from April 2020 to September 2023. A review of the thirteen recent incidents is presented. In addition to the murder/injuries to police officers, several civilians were also killed and injured. In some instances, the police utilized deadly force to stop the attacker. The frequency in which police use deadly force is discussed in relation to the murder of police and the homicide rate in Canada. Methods for reducing injuries and deaths to police and citizens are outlined, while incorporating the benefits of implementing the Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics (ICAT) program and a Vulnerable Person Registry (VPR). These strategic initiatives integrate information, communications and tactical skills with crisis recognition/intervention approaches that emphasize officer and public safety.
