Crisis Medicine: The Anesthesiologist’s Role in Airway, Trauma, and Emergency Preparedness
摘要
When it comes to airway management, anesthesiologists continue to lead in promoting a culture of safety, both within and beyond the operating room (OR). Ultimately, ensuring safe and effective airway management is a shared responsibility across disciplines, with anesthesiologists playing a central role in guiding best practices and patient-centered care. The role of trauma anesthesiologist remains indispensable—not just in the OR but also in the non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) setting. Their expertise in resuscitation and hemodynamic stabilization is essential to improve survival and outcomes in patients with life-threatening traumatic injuries. Beyond their clinical responsibilities, trauma anesthesiologists are actively involved in education, developing clinical guidelines, evaluating outcomes, leading quality improvement initiatives, and conducting research trials that advance the field of trauma care. Anesthesiologists are more than perioperative physicians—they are crisis leaders, airway specialists, and critical care experts. Their unique skill set and adaptability make them vital contributors to any emergency preparedness and response system. The inclusion of anesthesiologists in developing disaster management plans for hospitals is increasingly recognized as a vital component of perioperative readiness. Recognizing and formalizing their role in disaster planning can significantly enhance healthcare system resilience in the face of future crises. By implementing principles championed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and its Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness (COTEP), anesthesiologists use their expertise and skills to help the medical community and public at large prepare for the next major disaster.
