Anesthesiology is unique among medical specialties in countless ways, including an anesthesiologist’s intimate familiarity with the equipment used daily. These tools play a critical role in enhancing patient safety and increasing clinical efficiency. Indeed, visionary physician leaders in anesthesiology have played a pivotal role in advancing patient safety by championing essential equipment safety standards. Innovations such as universal size standards for tracheal tube connectors, tactile identification of oxygen flow control knobs, and the pin index safety system, among countless others, have significantly enhanced patient safety. However, the processes involved in sourcing, procuring, stocking, standardizing, servicing, and maintaining essential equipment are often not well understood by clinicians or administrators. These personnel may take for granted that these items will be readily available and function when needed. While these responsibilities are usually managed by non-clinical personnel on behalf of the facility, anesthesiologists often lend their expertise in this area (Tewfik et al. ASA Monit 87: 25–26, 2023). As the primary users of this essential equipment, it is incumbent upon clinicians to take an active role in their procurement, maintenance, and proper use to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care. This chapter will explore essential aspects of supply chain management and the procurement of anesthesia supplies and durable equipment. Key topics include the critical role of anesthesia supplies in patient care, the fundamental components of the anesthesia supply chain, demand forecasting and planning, procurement principles and challenges, quality assurance, risk management, sustainability, and ethical sourcing.

摘要
