Perioperative management will ultimately involve the appropriate use of blood products and adjuncts in the care of the surgical patient. Transfusions are a life-saving therapy in the proper situation, but the administration of unnecessary blood products is wasteful of such a precious resource and carries the risk of severe complications for the patient. Patient blood management initiatives and techniques offer effective mechanisms to manage patient coagulopathy, hemostasis, and anemia all the while reducing patient complications, cost to the hospital, and misuse of common blood supplies.
