This chapter introduces the book, framing it as an interpretative study that reconstructs the philosophy of Hans Jonas by contextualizing his thought historically and culturally, and tracing the evolution of his central concepts of freedom and responsibility. I argue that Jonas’s work continues to be relevant today as it anticipated critical ethical dilemmas posed by ecological destruction and the unchecked advance of technology. Finally, I outline the content of the following chapters.
