Micro plastics are tiny piece of plastic which are >5 mm in size present in the environment as a result of plastic pollution. It is ubiquitous across the environment. Humans have high chance of getting exposed to these micro plastics which becomes a great threat to the mankind. Plastics are produced and utilized all over the world because of its light weight, low production cost, durability etc. Used plastic materials are thrown in the environment which becomes the emerging environmental pollutant. Thus micro plastics get accumulated in the environment and it gets contaminated into the food products which creates problem to both human and environment. In the modern era plastic packaging materials, food containers, water bottles, baby feeders are widely used by the human population for storing and consuming food materials which has a high chance of releasing micro plastics in the food items. Prolonged consumption of such micro plastics will alter the normal metabolic process and it affects the entire human system. It leads to many ill effects including reproductive and developmental issues, neurotoxicity, impaired immune system, DNA damage, Oxidative stress and various metabolic disorder. This chapter discusses on the possible hazards of the micro plastics to human health focussing on different routes of exposure to reduce the ill effects of micro plastics.

摘要
