Is the Great Resignation upon us? Workload, Job Satisfaction, and Intention to Leave Academia in Selected Asian Countries
摘要
This chapter examines the challenges facing academics in higher education within Asia, amidst global concerns of a "Great Resignation" driven by competitive environments and post-pandemic strains. It examines global higher education trends, presents a conceptual framework, and discusses issues related to job satisfaction, academic workload and the potential policy, practice, and research interventions necessary for addressing future challenges. Using data from the Academic Profession in the Knowledge Society (APIKS) survey conducted in Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan, the chapter reveals that while Asian academics are overworked and underappreciated, they continue to adapt by shifting roles and responsibilities. They also demonstrate a relatively resilient commitment and loyalty to the profession. The findings underscore the complex commitment of academics to their fields, shedding light on the varied strategies they employ to navigate high expectations and demanding working conditions, and propose targeted interventions to alleviate these challenges
