Self-confidence and Its Relationship to Achievement in the Snatch Lift Among First-Year Students in the College of Physical Education and Sports Science
摘要
Self-confidence is an important element for athletic performance, especially in skill-intensive sports like weightlifting. The relationship between self-confidence and snatch lift performance in first-year students at the college of physical education and sports sciences, university of Baghdad. The study employed a descriptive correlational research design and administrated Vealey’s Self-Confidence Scale to assess psychological confidence with standardized performance assessments for measuring snatch lift execution on 60 randomly selected students. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results showed that the students had moderate to high self-confidence with a mean score of self-confidence of 66.22, however, the variation among students indicated that targeted psychological help is needed for some. Self-confidence was positively correlated with snatch lift performance (r = 0.909, p = 0.000), confirming the necessary component of psychological readiness necessary for success in any aspect of athletics. Moreover, the analysis revealed that prevailing training practices focus primarily on physical preparation at the expense of comprehensive psychological conditioning. Therefore, the current study highlights the importance of integrating the concept of confidence-building, systematic self-talk, and mental resilience training into the weight-lifting coaching interventions. Before each period, a transitional psychological preparedness test provides evidence of personal athletic requirements of auxiliary psychological support where necessary. This is supplemented with systematic psychological training that uses systematic interventions e.g. training in visualization, training in goal setting using feedback and positive reinforcement, which are later converted into practical recommendations. Dynamics of self-confidence might be explained through longitudinal studies and specific psychological interventions aimed at the improvement of this phenomenon and its further relation to the results in sports performance.
