Waltzing from Where? An Introduction
摘要
In this chapter, I introduce the reader to the main subjects and structure of the book. I begin with a brief narrative vignette where the world champions Leo and Anna experience winning their title for the first time and go on to discuss the historical framework of the Soviet Union dance scene as well as the North American diasporic dance community in the late 1900s and early 2000s. I briefly discuss the disciplinary framework and the training methodology of DanceSport and invite the readers to hear the story of my journey in dance. I speak about my motivations for writing this book and the anthropological as well as archival methods used in my research. I bring up the conflicts I had as a practitioner-researcher and clarify the academic jargon commonly used in Dance Studies. Finally, I provide a chapter breakdown with the main areas covered in the book including: arts and dance in the Soviet Union, arts and dance in the USA and Canada, the dancers' voices, multiculturalism, and the commodification/ politicization of DanceSport.
