The Method of Synthetic Philosophy. Extending the Web of Knowledge Through Problem Solving
摘要
In this chapter I describe the method of synthetic philosophy. Its key thesis is that problems are solved within the maximally coherent theory, or MCT: the theory that coherently answers the largest number of well-posed questions. This postulate provides a semi-quantitative criterion for deciding whether a philosophical problem is solved or not. I argue that the MCT can be hunted for and found by exploiting the continuity between science and philosophy. I briefly make the link with methodological credos of Quine and of Ladyman and Ross. The synthetic method can already be aided by AI, as illustrated in first case studies. Moreover, it is likely that future AI will work according to this method, in philosophy and beyond.
