The number of electrons and thus the number of protons corresponds to the atomic number in the periodic system of elements. But the really interesting thing is not so much the atomic number but the relative atomic weight. The existence of the neutron was inferred in the year 1932 by James Chadwick by consequent interpretations of experimental results by Irène Curie and Frédéric Joliot and from his own cloud chamber experiments with different gas fillings.
