What Works for Inclusive Education? On the Perceived Effectiveness of the TOOLS Project Training of Pre-service EFL Teacher Trainees
摘要
Inclusive education has recently gained more interest due to, among others, the geopolitical problems triggering migrations. The more recent situation in Polish educational institutions, which have been facing the rise in the number of Ukrainian students since the beginning of war in Ukraine in 2022, substantiates the need for promoting inclusive learning and better understanding of the socio-cultural mechanisms associated with diversity and acceptance. To respond to this need, a Technologically Enhanced Online Opportunities for Language Learning in Inclusive Education (TOOLS) project was designed and implemented. The main objective of the project was to create educational materials for awareness raising on social, cultural and gender inclusion. The aim of this paper is to outline the main objectives of the TOOLS project and to share the results of a study on the perceived effectiveness of the course promoting inclusive education in the Polish education context. Pre-service teacher trainees were invited to share their understanding of concepts such as diversity, gender inequality and accent bias before and after participating in three TOOLS project’s course modules on these issues. Qualitative data revealed nuanced findings regarding the extent to which the TOOLS project’s course modules raised the participants’ awareness of elements of inclusive education.
