Westerns and Cowboys as Comfort Care for the Soul
摘要
Former Chaplain Hellena Moon highlights the importance of humanist spiritual assessments in our care for patients. While the patient may not have had “religious” needs, he had deep spiritual longings. His own bodily vulnerability and loss of independence brought him to a place of disconnect and alienation. Connecting to the patient’s passions of reading Westerns was a deep reminder of what beauty and joy could be found in our individual spiritual pleasures. The patient thinks of his future, as he reconnects with his past identity. It is a deeply spiritual moment, where the “waiting” in the hospital becomes a little more bearable.
