The contributions by Wil van der Aalst to the fundamentals of business process management can be measured in different ways. A quantitative assessment can easily build on scientometrics. What is more difficult to grasp is the richness of topics that he has been working on so far. In this chapter, we use the business process management lifecycle as a map to structure the content of his research. Our analysis highlights the diversity of contributions that he has made to this field of research. His contributions on process mining, the workflow patterns, and soundness stand out.
