Remembering a conversation with Wil van der Aalst many years ago, this paper explores the relationships between business processes and data. It argues that the role of data in business processes has become more and more prominent over the years. In the early days of business process management, data was not prominent at all. Over the years, data became increasingly important in process modeling and analysis, process verification, and, most prominently, in process mining. At a BPM keynote in 2010, the keynote speaker indicated that data and processes are two sides of the same coin. Wil van der Aalst laid out what this really means: object-centric business process management.
