This work explores carbon emissions from electricity generation in Italy between 2021 and 2023 using functional data analysis. Daily emission profiles are constructed from hourly data using Fourier basis functions. The analysis covers both the national level and the electricity market zones, highlighting key differences in emission levels and variability. In addition, the functional principal component analysis is applied to find the main patterns of variation, the first two components explaining more than 96% of the total variability in Italian emissions. This study provides valuable information to support energy policies and emission reduction strategies.

摘要

This work explores carbon emissions from electricity generation in Italy between 2021 and 2023 using functional data analysis. Daily emission profiles are constructed from hourly data using Fourier basis functions. The analysis covers both the national level and the electricity market zones, highlighting key differences in emission levels and variability. In addition, the functional principal component analysis is applied to find the main patterns of variation, the first two components explaining more than 96% of the total variability in Italian emissions. This study provides valuable information to support energy policies and emission reduction strategies.
