The Silent Invasion: Microplastics and Marine Life
摘要
Microplastics (MPs), emerging as pervasive pollutants, are critically impacting mangrove ecosystems by altering sediment composition, affecting microbial communities, and threatening faunal diversity. This chapter synthesizes recent advancements in understanding MP accumulation in mangrove zones, including degradation pathways, biota exposure, and sediment toxicity. Case studies from Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America illustrate the spatial variability of contamination. Furthermore, we evaluate biotechnological interventions (e.g., microbial PET degradation) and propose integrated ecosystem-based management (EBM) strategies combining waste control, policy reform, and bioremediation. We emphasize the urgent need for harmonized monitoring frameworks and improved policy to mitigate MP impacts and ensure mangrove sustainability.
