The applied quantitative analysis of behavior is a relatively new subfield of the quantitative analysis of behavior that focuses on the application of quantitative models to improve socially significant behavior. In this chapter, we review three quantitative models that have helped guide theoretical and practical improvements in the assessment and treatment of safety compromising behavior displayed by individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Intellectual Developmental Disorder. We briefly describe the basic, translational, and applied frameworks used to develop, refine, and test promising quantitative models for improving socially significant behavior. We draw considerably from our own work in the applied quantitative analysis of behavior to describe the criteria, considerations, and challenges we have encountered. In closing, we discuss future directions for the applied quantitative analysis of behavior and emphasize the importance of collaboration and resource-sharing in supporting others who are entering or already contributing to this emerging and exciting area of research and research-informed practice.
