Subsidence of Joshimath
摘要
In January 2023, Joshimath town experienced sudden land subsidence, creating widespread panic among residents. The event resulted in the development of cracks in buildings and ground surfaces across several parts of the town. In some areas, active ground movement and slope failure were observed. As a consequence, many residents were forced to evacuate their homes. A detailed field survey was conducted immediately after the incident to document the extent and nature of the damage. Geological, geomorphological, and infrastructural conditions were systematically assessed. The collected data were analyzed to identify possible causes and affected zones. The study provides important insights into subsidence-related hazards in mountain towns and their implications for urban safety and planning.
